Description

Why is mathematical thinking so important? How do we develop a deep understanding of number sense? How is mathematics taught using an inquiry approach? What are the connections between concepts and mathematical inquiry? The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and ideas needed to successfully address the teaching and learning of mathematics within the context of their school. Teachers will gain a
deeper understanding and empathy for mathematics, have opportunities to discuss the teaching and learning of mathematics with peers, experience hands on learning, develop and refine teaching strategies, share resources and work with relevant curriculum documentation.

Gareth Jacobson is an international education consultant. He has worked as a teacher, trainer and administrator in a variety of international school settings (UK, Bahamas, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Tanzania and Italy), and developed a broad and knowledgeable perspective of teaching and learning within global contexts. Gareth continues to work as a PYP IB workshop leader and school visitor and has also worked on adult educational development projects with NGOs in Kenya and Sri Lanka. Gareth’s passion within education centres around the diverse applications of children’s inquiry.
Fundamental to his philosophy and practice of education is empowering students to be leaders of their own learning, through constructivist and transdisciplinary approaches that foster collaboration and creativity within the learning environment.

Day 1

08:30 – 09:00 Participants arrival
09:00 – 11:00 Session One

Introduction

What is mathematics? We will explore our beliefs about mathematics and consider current theories and practices for teaching and learning. We will explore the wider connections of the discipline, as we look at the role of mathematics as a language to explain and describe the world around us.

11:00 Break
11:30 – 1:00 Session Two

Mathematical thinking – Developing a foundation for mathematical thinking is probably the most valuable practice we can establish to sustain confident mathematical learners. During the session we will investigate the essential ingredients of mathematical thinking and develop strategies for embedding these norms into the culture of our classrooms.

13:00 Lunch
2:00 – 03:30 Session Three

Developing Number sense – Along with mathematical thinking the development of number sense is fundamental. How we develop a positive attitude toward number sense is critical for empowering learners to embrace challenge, mistakes and nurture perseverance. During this session we will examine strategies and practices for optimising number sense.

Day 2

09:00 – 11:00 Session Four

Developing a culture of inquiry – The ability to make mathematical decisions, problem solve, problem pose and evaluate our findings are best supported through a culture of inquiry in the classroom. During this session you will learn how to create opportunities and structure inquiry techniques in the classroom to support authentic mathematical learning that is driven by the student.

11:00 Break
11:30 – 1:00 Session Five

The role of concepts in mathematical inquiry – By nature, mathematics is a conceptual discipline that enables students to construct and frame their understanding of mathematics through ever increasing levels of abstraction. During this session you will learn how to utilize concepts as a framework for planning, teaching and assessing mathematical inquiry.

13:00 Lunch
2:00 – 03:30 Session six

Creative planning for mathematical inquiry – During this session we will analyse our curriculum to establish opportunities for integrating the big ideas of the workshop. We will consider the depth and detail necessary for planning authentic math inquiries and learn strategies that can help both within and beyond the classroom.

Certificates of Attendance will be issued to participants who have taken part in all sessions. Please make sure your personal information is correct in the registration form.
