Description

This workshop explores the role of the educator in creating conditions under which agency, alongside play, shape not just powerful learning, but equally powerful learners.  Ideas discussed will extend beyond the role of the educator as a co-researcher, examining the impact of documentation and learning spaces to transform learning as we know it. We will consider the role of the educator to shape self-regulated learners, helping students to take responsibility, ownership and ‘mastery’  for and of their learning.

The workshop will engaged participants in collaborative conversations about ‘agency’ in the early years. We will view a series of videos of students ‘at play’,  to reveal the thinking and theories of our young learners. What does it really mean to be the co-creators of learning opportunities and what could this look like, how should we respond?

09:00 – 11:00 Session One

Session 1 – Introduction: What’s all this noise about agency?

In this session we will examine our own personal beliefs about learning in the early years. We will identify the conditions that shape the identity of our learning spaces and the impact that these spaces currently have on our learners.  This will set the scene, to explore further, this notion of agency and how it shapes the learning in the early years.

11:00 – 11:30 Break

11:30 – 01:00 Session Two

Session 2 – Agency as a powerful approach to learning in the early years

In this session we will examine some of the current research and thinking about agency. We will discuss the significance of our role in viewing  our young learners as being curious, capable and competent. We will take the term ‘agency’ to be more than just a buzzword, we will explore some of the conditions under which ‘agency’ can grow.

01:00 – 02:00 Lunch

02:00 – 03:30 Session Three

Session 3 – How can we connect play and agency to empower our young learners?

In this session we will use video evidence and discussion to find the common threads that leads educators to build an image of the learner, and how planning for the next steps will allow for student ownership.  We will put the terms ‘voice’ and ‘choice’ under the microscope and identify classroom routines and strategies that will allow for a stronger presence of ‘agency’ in our learning spaces.

Day 2

09:00 – 11:00 Session Four

Session 4 – How does pedagogical documentation amplify agency in learning?

In this session we will review some of our current approaches to documenting learning, identifying the value and impact of the evidence we have collected. We will view a range of different approaches to documentation as well as the ‘skill’ of active listening and how this can contribute to understanding and identifying our role in responding to the learner.

11:00 – 11:30 Break

11:30 – 01:00 Session Five

Session 5 – What are the elements of stimulating and inviting learning spaces?

In this session we will explore and create design principles for developing highly engaging learning spaces, connected to our noticings and understandings of our younger learners. We will draw upon our recent conversations about documentation, and how this can be used as a powerful framework used intentionally, to amplify both the theories and thinking of our young learners.

01:00 – 02:00 Lunch

02:00 – 03:30 Session six

Session 6 – Reflection and action planning

In this session we will use the highlights of each session to cast a net and bring together the key elements that will shape our future decisions and directions in our own contexts. We will collaborate and coach each other to create a plan of action to generate ideas to lead discussion back in our own schools and begin a professional learning community related to our chosen passions.
