Description

This workshop outlines the 21ST CENTURY SKILLS framework and gives practical suggestions on how to incorporate a focus on developing these skills into regular classroom practice. Ideas discussed will include the structure of the skills framework, vertical and horizontal articulation, cognitive, metacognitive and affective skills, teaching and assessing 21ST CENTURY SKILLS, designing inquiry based learning around 21ST CENTURY SKILLS and developing self-regulated learners through helping students to take responsibility for their own skills assessment and development.

The workshop will be delivered in a “hands-on” style full of activities for participants and are all designed to give schools clear practical strategies.

Lance G. King, B. Tech, Dip. Gifted Ed.(dist), M. Ed.(hons) – has 33 years teaching experience in both the secondary and tertiary sectors, is an internationally respected author, teacher and workshop facilitator and is the creator of the Art of Learning programme presently delivered in thirty-two countries. Within the International Baccalaureate Organisation he has worked on the development of the IBCC the MYP (Next Chapter) and the DP programmes and was the principal architect of the reformulated Approaches To Learning (21ST CENTURY SKILLS) curriculum. He is married with four children, lives in Raglan, New Zealand and divides his time between teaching and presenting workshops for teachers, parents and students around the world and writing.

Session 3: Affective ATL (21st C) Skills – Teaching Resilience, Courage and Failing Well – 2 hours

  • What is the significance of failure and a student’s reaction to it?
  • How can students (and teachers) learn how to “fail well”?
  • What is the role of attribution and causality in success, failure and motivation?
  • How can students learn to be more resilient and more self-motivated?
  • How can Affective ATL (21st C) skills be implemented across all programmes?
  • What are strategies for “teaching” Affective ATL (21st C) skills?

Day 2

Session 4: Design and Implementation of Subject Specific ATL (21st C) Skills – 2 hours

  • Teachers as subject experts – utilising own experience to define Subject Specific skills
  • Summative assessments – what skills are needed in each subject to give students advantage in their summative assessments in each subject?
  • What are the top 10 Subject Specific skills in each subject area?
  • Subject Specific ATL (21st C) skill Introduction, Practice and Mastery
  • Mapping Subject Specific ATL (21st C) skill articulation horizontally and vertically

Session 5: Metacognition and ATL (21st C) Skills Assessment – 1 hour

  • What is the difference between meta-cognitive knowledge and meta-cognitive performance?
  • How can teachers raise meta-cognitive awareness in students?
  • Is it possible to assess ATL (21st C) skills in isolation?
  • How can students improve their own performance through meta-cognitive reflection on subject matter, ATL (21st C) skills and teaching/learning strategies?
  • Developing self-assessment practices

Session 6:

Inquiry, Blended and Self-Managed Learning – 1 hour

  • What are the teaching/learning practices that generate student motivation and achieve highest levels of understanding?

  • Utilising good quality internet resources to design inquiry based blended learning experiences
  • How can teachers design learning experiences that use ATL (21st C) skills, achieve subject objectives and promote the development of self-managed learning at the level of self-regulation?

From Pedagogy to Andragogy – 1 hour

  • What are the significant differences in needs and motivational drives between junior and senior students?
  • What are the teaching practices that best suit senior students?
  • How can Mastery, Autonomy and Purpose be developed in senior classes?
  • What are the particular ATL (21st C) skills that senior students need to be successful in their next step?

Fees

Fees include all materials necessary for the workshops, lunches and coffee breaks during workshop days. Workshop fees do not cover transportation or accommodation.

Visas

Participants are responsible for any visas.

Payment will be made via bank transfer.
Bank detailed information will be given via confirmation email.
Please indicate participant name and workshop in the transfer reference.
Please also note that all charges are the responsibility of the remitter.
Full payment is due within 4 working days after confirmation of registration.
Spaces are limited. If payment has not been received within the deadline, spaces will be released to other interested persons.

Cancellation

  • If you are unable to attend this event, you may send a substitute delegate in your place at no additional cost. Please advise us of any substitutions as soon as possible. The participation fee will not be reimbursed upon cancellation if done then less than one month of the workshop date.

If the workshop is cancelled or rescheduled, 4 Generations 4 Education will make every effort to contact every registered delegate.
